♦ HEADCANON: Less of a major point of headcanon and more just to explain, but...
It's not really clear how many years the series spans across but I guesstimated between 6-months to one year per season with starting ages between 14-16 (guesses from Beast Boy to Cyborg, with Robin, Raven, and Starfire falling in between). So-
S1-S2: 15-16
S3-S4: 17
S5: 18
Trouble in Tokyo: 18
The series Wiki states that Robin was 15 when he left Batman to strike out solo, and that this was pre-series. His arrival in Jump City starts with the origin story season 5 episode "Go!" as he expresses being new in town. That's the same day that Starfire escapes from the Gordanian transport ship. I believe she would have been 15 or so at this point as well.
In the season 2 episode "How Long is Forever?" Starfire is sent forward in time twenty years and in that timeline she encounters all of the other Titans in turn. They each seem to be middle-aged in appearance with Cyborg and Raven showing more haggard faces, Robin having gone through a late growth spurt, and Beast Boy even having started balding drastically. I'd put the Titans at about late thirties to early forties in this episode.
That's about how I came to the conclusion about Starfire's age. She could actually be 18 or older by her canon point. Also how do Tamaraneans age? How long does it take them? Are they like Saiyans who stop showing their age/growing after a certain point?? WHO KNOWS.
Five years before Starfire arrived on Earth the alien race of conquerors known as "Gordanians" attacked Tamaran when Starfire was still young (10 or so). Wildfire was sent away sometime shortly after this and Starfire is shown with her parents looking over a war-torn Tamaran. Sometime after this, maybe a year she was traded as a slave to the Gordanians.
It is established that Komand'r (Blackfire) was in fact the one responsible for trading Koriand'r's freedom in exchange for the Gordanians leaving their planet in peace. Their parents died of heartbreak from the loss of their children, leaving Blackfire in charge of Tamaran with no other remaining heirs to the throne to challenge her rule. Koriand'r (now going by Starfire) was surprised to learn this upon her return to Tamaran for marriage, implying that she had no knowledge of the death of their parents.
She would have spent at least a few years (probably 13-15) as a slave of the Citadel, but any actions she took during that time would have been under orders and threat of her captors. I believe that she was being transported to the Citadel in part because of her status as a princess of Tamaran (she expressed that she was being considered a "prize" rather than a slave) and in part for her disobedient behavior. Surely if anyone could get her in line it would be Lord Trogar. Add to that the final insult of being prisoner to the very creature who decimated her planet and it's no surprise that Starfire fought like hell to escape.
- ★ PERSONALITY: Starfire is often considered to be the most cheerful and compassionate member of the team (which SOME might find surprising for a member of a race that doesn't even have a word for "nice"), aside from possibly Beast Boy. Usually she's the one most attuned to her roommates emotional state, or at the very least the first to want to address the issue directly in an effort to help. She's a bubbly, giggly, caring young girl striving to fit in on Earth and learn all of its customs. Overall she's a very virtuous person, her morals very firmly in place, but she has her playful side, finding plenty in life to rejoice in, to smile and laugh about.
Most of her hobbies seem to either be artsy or people oriented. She's demonstrated a talent for playing musical instruments from home (though we're never given a gauge on how good she actually is as there are no other Tamaraneans to compare her to), singing, poetry, some... form of alien Pilates and yoga... and culinary arts. She enjoys stereotypical "girly" things but also revels in her abilities, including her combat skills and strength. She lifts weights with Cyborg, makes trips to the mall, has belching contests with the guys, likes to paint her nails and dress up, she's a little flirtatious (read as: has a healthy appreciation for the opposite sex), babies her pet killer larva (Silkie - acquired sometime during season 4), and seems to spend a lot of time experimenting in the kitchen.
In most instances she can be very patient (she waited for what might very well be about two years through five seasons and one feature length film for Robin to come around to the romantic tension between them, but admittedly her feelings towards him were largely unopposed saveforabriefcrushonAqualad also). Most of the time she displays charming quirks and a knack for getting into things kind of the same way a kitten manages to get into all kinds of things around the home. Her curiosity hasn't gotten her into any serious trouble, yet, but she's often easily impressed and fascinated by new things, big or small.
Her daily habits are pretty extreme, too. She drinks mustard as a beverage instead of using it as a condiment. She mistook mint frosting, sprinkles, and ice cream for pizza toppings and even then she didn't think it was odd at all, especially in combination. She thinks that chickens are adorable, and plays with them like one would play with parakeets or canaries. She also has no qualms with eating strange foods or tasting things that come from strange places. She sleeps with her head hanging off the edge of the bed and her feet on the pillow. Did I mention that she drinks mustard like it's Dr. Pepper?
The creators have likened Starfire to a quirky "foreign exchange student". She's well intended and always gives whatever she's doing her best effort. Her way of speaking reflects this as well, as she's very rarely heard using nicknames (and when she does they're usually in Tamaranean), speaking with proper English grammar, and seldom using conjunctions. Also, Starfire is actually pretty superstitious, and as such traditions and festivals are to be observed! If you've ever had a friend that insisted on passing along EVERY chain letter that they received by text or email? THAT would be Starfire. She takes things like that very seriously and usually one of the others has to take the time to explain things like that to her. This ranges from simple naivety and inexperience to a strong belief in certain values. She becomes very distraught when her friends begin fighting on "Blorthog", a Tamaranean holiday to celebrate friendship. Even though they dismiss her worries and try to reassure her that the fighting is just "roommate stuff" she remains convinced later during her trip to the future that the cause for the Titan's break up is the "rekmas" (a Tamaranean word for what happens when friends drift apart and their friendship dies). Cyborg confirms that they drifted apart after her disappearance in their past and Starfire becomes determined to fix the future by fixing their friendship. She cannot simply accept that they are destined to not remain friends. That leads us right into:
Okay, so now it gets a little bit weird. On the one hand Star's very polite and considerate towards her fellow humanoids and... well, all creatures in general (as long as they don't freak her out). That SOMETIMES goes for enemies as well (example: Trouble in Tokyo; During the opening chase with Psycho Tech she taps him on the shoulder, excuses herself, and explains that she did not wish to attack him while he wasn't looking). In other instances she's been shown to put manners aside for the sake of battle (example: cutting off Red X mid-sentence by blasting him with her eye star bolts because he was blatantly hitting on her).
Meanwhile, on the OTHER, hand she's very up front and not big on personal space when it comes to showing affection. Starfire is frequently shown to be one of the few members of the team who hugs Robin on a fairly regular basis. By the calm way he reacts to it it's apparent that he's completely accustomed and just sort of expects it. They ALL are. Strangers, new friends, it doesn't matter, you are all open for Starfire hugs. Every last one of you. Except for that guy because that guy looks really intimidatingly, intensely not interested in free hugs and even Star has her limits.
When the team meets the meta human, Terra, and begin to introduce themselves Starfire performs a curtsy in one moment and in the next she's completely invaded Terra's personal space and hit her with a barrage of questions (including asking if she'd like to be her friend). After Terra agrees to become friends with Starfire and the rest of the Titans she informs them that she's been sleeping out in a cave. Star's response is "I cannot allow my new friend to reside in a cave." - not in a pushy way, just concerned and a bit surprised. Kind of like she's simply (calmly) stating a fact. It doesn't matter that they only just met Terra, or that they know nothing about her, Starfire (and most of the others) is ready to welcome her into their home with open arms and show her ALL THE THINGS. That's how she is with almost everyone she meets. She wants to be friends with everyone she meets if at all possible. I swear that's probably her life's ambition right there.
By nature she's very much a "trust first", forgiving kind of person, and it takes a lot to break that trust. This is seen very clearly with how often she tries to give Blackfire the benefit of the doubt. Even after Blackfire showed up on Earth, tried to leave Starfire to take her place in prison, and was ready to abandon her to that fate Starfire still considered her family. Later when called back to Tamaran she was more prone to believe that Blackfire had the best interest of Tamaran at heart and agreed to the marriage. She later was told the truth, fought for the crown of Tamaran, and won- banishing her sister but NOT disowning her. It wasn't until later in the tie-in comics when Blackfire went so far as to pay a shape shifting villain to pose as their younger brother Wildfire that Star finally drew the line. It was at that point that she finally disowned Blackfire, stating that Wildfire was the only [biological] family she had left.
Starfire chooses to see the good in others and believes that no one is beyond forgiveness and redemption. She has a very pure heart and is unfamiliar with human culture, but her sincere nature, open mind, and strong heart endears her to almost everyone that she meets. She's always well intended and seldom gets angry. Starfire is loyal, brave, and even tempered, if a bit clueless. She constantly butchers various idioms and sayings ("Potatoing the couch", "the mall of shopping", "kick the butt", and "opening a can of the butt whoop" being just a few examples). The others seem to expect this as just the way Starfire speaks, however, since no one corrects her on it. As a princess of Tamaran she has also been shown to have a strong sense of obligation to her people. Galfore had to advise her to listen to her heart not only for Tamaran, but also for her own sake. She seems to have taken the lesson to heart. While she still often puts the needs of others above her own she also seems more willing to stand up for herself and fight for what she wants.
Tamaraneans harness the power of their emotions to function from the moment of birth (as stated by Starfire: Even newborns can fly.). Unbridled joy, righteous fury, and boundless confidence for example. It makes them an unbelievably powerful race of fighters and yet it can also leave them incredibly vulnerable. Even considering this there's really only one episode in which Starfire states that she's actually lost her powers, and that's "Stranded". During the episode she and Robin got into something of an argument, and Starfire became confused about Robin's feelings towards her or what the nature of their relationship truly was. It's not until near the very end of the episode when they sit down and resolve the misunderstanding that she's able to sort through it and her powers finally return.
To start, she actually does have a temper and is capable of holding grudges. When it comes to Robin she can easily become jealous if other females are too forward with him - see Blackfire and Kitten in "Sisters" and "Date with Destiny". When this happens she seems to take her anger and frustration out on inanimate objects and sometimes people (punching the hood of Kitten's limo so hard that it crumples, melting the punch bowl, growling at and consequently terrifying two innocent bystanders). When she's been offended she usually responds by snubbing the guilty party (ignoring Beast Boy and his attempts to weasel his way back into her good graces by being cute, refusing to hear Robin out after his verbal blunder regarding their relationship status). When she feels insecure and embarrassed there are times when instead of going to her friends about it she hides it and tries to deal with it on her own due to fear of rejection or ridicule. She's actually demonstrated that she's very self conscious about her lack of familiarity with Earth culture, though her friends are so accepting of most of her weird behavior that she doesn't think twice about it with THEM, at least. It just so happens that in addition to hating to do so she's kind of a terrible liar as it stands, but because of them being so accustomed to some of the weirder traditions that Starfire has shared she has an easy time of getting away with it on the rare occasion she does (by no merit of her own skill, and entirely because they write it off as "aliens"). If it's only for the sake of a mission and/or helping a friend then she has also demonstrated that she call pull it off with a straight face. Cartoon logic, I guess. Just telling it like it is in canon. We never really get to see what kind of conversations happen to "motivate" her into acting the part she's been assigned.
Though she admits to enjoying being terrified while watching a horror movie with the others, she later expresses levels of genuine terror and panic in the episode "Fear Itself" when she and the others are suddenly the ones being hunted down and killed one by one by an unexplained monster. She's also expressed insecurity over the idea of being replaced ("Sisters"), losing her friendships and the people that she cares about ("How Long is Forever", "Transformation", "Betrothed", "Masks", and "The Quest" to an extent).
- ★ COURT ALLIANCE: Seelie; While Starfire DOES believe in change that's really as far as her alignment with the Unseelie court goes. The brief insight into her childhood and life on Tamaran that we get in the comics lines up very well with her new life on Earth, where Starfire is kind and expresses great joy for her life as a Titan helping to protect Jump City and the world at large.
▶ᴏᴠᴇʀᴠɪᴇᴡ: Starfire's powers are tied to her emotional states, and can only be triggered by specific emotions; because of this, her powers can be weakened or compromised when she is in emotional turmoil, like when she lost her ability to fly and a great deal of her strength due to depression. Due to the war-like nature of her home planet, Starfire is well trained in the arts of martial combat. She is an expert in Tamaranean martial arts, and was skilled enough to take down numerous Gordanian soldiers while her hands and arms were bound. She is also versed in weapons, using a hand crafted bow and arrows at one point with little effort. Her eyes sometimes glow green when using her powers but not always.
▶ʟᴀɴɢᴜᴀɢᴇ ᴀssɪᴍɪʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ: Lip-to-lip contact enables Starfire to assimilate information, basic understanding of languages specifically, which gives her current fluency in English.
▶ғʟɪɢʜᴛ: By feeling unbridled joy, Starfire can achieve flight. In space, she can travel at nearly light speed, and her strength is not diminished when airborne.
▶sᴛʀᴇɴɢᴛʜ: Starfire has superhuman strength, considerably greater than Cyborg's; this ability is triggered by boundless confidence. She can shake part of a city by slamming her fists on the ground, and can lift everything from extremely heavy weights to various monsters and aliens many times her size, cars, limos, and buses.
▶sᴛᴀʀʙᴏʟᴛs: Starfire can project bright green energy from her body, activated by righteous fury. She mainly discharges compact orbs from her hands, called starbolts. Her starbolts produce both thermal and explosive results on contact, and are usually launched as thrown projectiles. However, she has also been shown to shoot this energy in the form of large beams from her hands. Starfire can augment the effectiveness of her punches by surrounding her hands in energy, and can also use this method to weld or carefully burn through obstacles with contact from her hands. On rare occasions, Starfire has been known to release from her entire body an omnidirectional blast of energy, which can destroy most everything around her in a very wide perimeter, or act as a temporary defensive barrier.
▶ᴡᴇᴀᴋɴᴇssᴇs: Starfire, like many Tamaraneans, is allergic to metallic chromium. It gives her flu-like symptons, and when she sneezes, she unleashes explosive starbolts out of her nose and mouth. Starfire has also shown that she isn't completely invulnerable to extremely cold temperatures. She collapses from cold and exhaustion while navigating a blizzard in Russia. Biological attacks from the inside have also proven effective methods to bring her down, such as when Slade engineered nanobots to force Robin's cooperation. They were capable of not only incapacitating but also possibly killing the Titans very painfully, including Starfire. She is also susceptible to magic and probably a few illnesses that are alien to her planet.

- ★ NETWORK SAMPLE: I am curious. What holidays are celebrated here in the Draubworld?
[Well she gets right to it doesn't she? Starfire doesn't know how to beat around the bush well enough to do so with strangers. She's direct and earnest, and not at all holding the locket still so much spinning. Now and then a view of an orange skinned girl with red hair and green eyes can be caught, but mostly the view seems to be swaying about erratically. That's because she's holding the locket by the chain, not yet familiar with how it works.]
I have learned of many since my arrival to the planet Earth, but I am most eager to learn more. Please, I am not yet familiar with the numerous locations available for our perusal.
[Oh sweet mercy thank you- she finally took the locket by the body and is holding it properly. No more motion sickness!]
If someone would be kind enough to tell me where I might find a store where I might do the purchasing or the borrowing of books I would be very grateful. [She smiles prettily and then closes the locket.]

Insecurities, Fears, and Sense of Self worth
Compared to the others (Robin, Beast Boy, and Raven) and considering how long the series ran Starfire (and Cyborg, to be fair) had no dedicated character arc. Much of the Titans series is episodic rather than following any sort of steady plot line, of course, so she did still manage to have a few character centric episodes that shed some insight into her faults and fears.
♦ Starfire has a very clear moral compass that she follows. She doesn't make exceptions for anyone about following this code, not even those who treat her like racial garbage. You could sling insults at her all day but she would still haul your butt out of a burning building.- ★ ABILITIES: Can be found here or here is a breakdown:
♦ All of the Seelie code is something that Starfire aligns with, especially as a being whose powers exist based on emotion. She sees the good in most of those around her and even those who have wronged her. She does not tell lies and she does not break promises, nor would she ignore a debt.
♦ She would never bring harm to or ignore someone weaker than her or even an equal or superior in need. Her life as a Titan has her doing exactly the opposite- seeking out those who need protecting and saving.
♦ Since arriving on Earth and befriending the Titans years ago Starfire has expressed that Earth and its people are now her home and her people, even going so far as to give up hard won leadership as Grand Ruler of her planet so that she can continue living with her friends as a hero.
♦ Starfire is very polite, even in battle. Even as far into the series as the post-series film "Trouble in Tokyo" she is shown to try not to attack an opponent who isn't looking. This isn't a constant, but she does in general seem to prefer not to use underhanded methods unless absolutely necessary.
♦ Not all Tamaraneans are ruthless. Wildfire is said to have had a pet and Starfire's memory of him seems to be a kind one. It is likely that as a princess of Tamaran under her nanny's upbringing that Starfire was allowed to express more of her true personality as a very caring child, and that later in life she became temporarily jaded during her enslavement to the Gordanians.
- ▶ᴇʏᴇ ʙᴇᴀᴍs: After going through the Tamaranean version of puberty, Starfire gained the ability to discharge energy from her eyes. Though not as destructive as her regular starbolts, these beams can be fired continuously in a steady stream, and are more precise. They also give her the element of surprise for when her arms are bound.
